Sof Omar - Sacred Cave

Sof Omar Cave is the longest cave system in Ethiopia and the largest underground cave network in Africa, extending over 15 kilometers. Located in the Bale region, it has been carved out over millennia by the Weyib River, which flows deep inside the subterranean limestone passages.
The cave is a sacred pilgrimage site for both Islam and local traditional beliefs, named after the holy Sheikh Sof Omar who took refuge here in the 12th century.
Inside, visitors walk through massive vaulted chambers supported by soaring limestone pillars (known as the 'Chamber of Columns'), presenting an awe-inspiring underworld cathedral of natural architecture.
